- Pilates

Pilates is a specific form of exercise training primarily targeting the deep core muscles of the body (see Core Stability). Over recent years Pilates has become increasingly championed in the fight against low back pain and for good reason. There are two main schools of Pilates through England with these being ‘Bodycontrol Pilates’ and ‘Stott Pilates’. Both these sites both have excellent information regarding Pilates so for more information you are best linking to them.

There are regulatory bodies overseeing Pilates instructors but their rhobustness is somewhat questionable. For this reason we would suggest that you seek you classes only on recommendation of your health professional or Nick. You can check to see the grading of your instructor (Register of Exercise Professionals) should you wish however the skill, expertise and knowledge of them may not be reflected in this accurately. If you do go it alone a few things that may indicate a good class are:

  1. Feeder Courses  - to help with technique prior to starting group classes proper
  2. Termed, Progressive Classes - If you can just turn up beware!
  3. Medical History Reviewed - Pilates teachers are not medically trained and most are comfortable with their boudaries of care however they should be able to understand spinal ailments as afterall, thats what they are treating.
  4. Offer Alternative Movements - If a particular exercise hurts, you should be offered an alternative way of doing it or advised to stop. You should be informed to tell your instructor should this occur.
